Ludwig van Beethoven – Piano Trio in E flat major, op.1 no.1
Nigel Westlake – Piano Trio (2003)
Composed in 1793 when Beethoven was only 23, the Piano Trio in E-flat was the work Beethoven felt deserving of his first opus number. It shows the assured young genius at play, in a work full of sparkle and charm. Australian composer Nigel Westlake's Piano Trio is a favourite work of the Lyrebirds. Perhaps most widely known for his film soundtracks (including Babe), this landmark Australian trio is filled with flowing lyrical gestures, and a virtuosic combination of rhythmic interplay and jazz-influenced melodies.
